  • Quotation of the Moment

    The West Wing #3.05:

There's an old saying: "Those who speak, don't know; and those who know, don't speak." I don't know if that's true or not, but I know that by and large the press doesn't care who really knows what as long as they've got a quote. Last Friday, we had our Week Ahead meeting in the Roosevelt Room. Some of you were there, most of you weren't, but I'm talking to all of you now. Bruno Gianelli and I were leading a discussion about whether or not the President should stop in Kansas on his way back from the West Coast, and I remarked that the Vice President is polling better than the President right now in the Plains states... ...and that if the President is re-elected, it's gonna be on the Vice President's coattails. That remark made its way to a White House reporter. We're a group. We're a team. From the President and Leo on through, we're a team. We win together. We lose together. We celebrate and we mourn together. And defeats are softened and victories sweetened because we did them together. And if you don't like this team then, there's the door... It's great to be in the know. It's great to have the scoop, to have the skinny, to be able to go to a reporter and say, "I know something you don't know." And so the press becomes your constituents and you sell out the team. So, an item will appear in the paper tomorrow, and it'll be embarrassing to me and embarrassing to the President. I'm not gonna have a witch hunt. I'm not gonna huff and puff. I'm not gonna take anyone's head off. I'm simply gonna say this: you're my guys. And I'm yours. And there's nothing I wouldn't do for you.

Last Night, I Dreamt I Went Back to Manderly…

Posted by jetblack on May 12th, 2004

Brownie points if you know what movie or book the above line is from.

Last night, I dreamt I went back to the house I grew up in, and though we no longer own it, I dreamt the people living there were incredibly cordial and invited me in to see what they had done to the place. I remember feeling somewhere empty inside at all the changes, and remembering the parts of the house redecorated and reutilized. I distinctly recall telling the new owner that he was using my room as an office. Anyway…

Went to the Giants game with who loosened up quite a bit from last time. I think we had a heck of a lot more fun last night than we did the first game we went to. I can only imagine what the third game is going to be like. There was shouting, and I got my “C’mon Blue!” call somewhere in the middle of the sixth inning, which is like reason number five to go to a ballgame in the first place. I’ll have to compile a list of the other reasons to go to Pac Bell Park, even if it’s not for baseball.

One of the discussions we had was visiting all the major league parks in the US, and Tap said she would have to go when its not baseball season, because when she goes, she goes for the game. Now, I would hardly argue that, because I’d go for the game, too. But nothing says you can’t go an hour ahead of the game to walk around the park, right? :) I’ve been wanting to do that kind of a road trip for a really long time, since my friend Shelly in high school did it with her dad back in 1990. They had this huge display in their house, with all the tickets they collected from each game they did. It was really cool to hear all the stories, and I felt the need to do it myself, just so I could say I’ve visited all 50 states. That would be a lot of fun for a summer outing for like two months or so.

By the way, and this is going to earn me some pain, but Tap? I just woke up :P You may now hate me.
