  • Quotation of the Moment

    /
There's an old saying: "Those who speak, don't know; and those who know, don't speak." I don't know if that's true or not, but I know that by and large the press doesn't care who really knows what as long as they've got a quote. Last Friday, we had our Week Ahead meeting in the Roosevelt Room. Some of you were there, most of you weren't, but I'm talking to all of you now. Bruno Gianelli and I were leading a discussion about whether or not the President should stop in Kansas on his way back from the West Coast, and I remarked that the Vice President is polling better than the President right now in the Plains states... ...and that if the President is re-elected, it's gonna be on the Vice President's coattails. That remark made its way to a White House reporter. We're a group. We're a team. From the President and Leo on through, we're a team. We win together. We lose together. We celebrate and we mourn together. And defeats are softened and victories sweetened because we did them together. And if you don't like this team then, there's the door... It's great to be in the know. It's great to have the scoop, to have the skinny, to be able to go to a reporter and say, "I know something you don't know." And so the press becomes your constituents and you sell out the team. So, an item will appear in the paper tomorrow, and it'll be embarrassing to me and embarrassing to the President. I'm not gonna have a witch hunt. I'm not gonna huff and puff. I'm not gonna take anyone's head off. I'm simply gonna say this: you're my guys. And I'm yours. And there's nothing I wouldn't do for you.

J-List kills me…

Posted by jetblack on July 30th, 2004

Some seriously funny radio commercials from J-List tonight on Japan-A-Radio:

“J-List brings you the best in Japanese Hentai Dating Sims. A special way to reach out and touch Japan.”

Oh my god, kill me now…

U105: The Show That Ate Japan-A-Radio

Posted by jetblack on July 26th, 2004

Hello, everyone.

Tonight’s show was retty well-received by those who gave us some feedback. I thought the final cut of the show came off really well, in spite of the long music cues; the first segment had to be cut at 27 minutes, and unfortunately, we were almost 5 minutes short! I had to extend some of the music cues to make up for lost time and added two long music bridges for the sub-segments… and it turned out to be 27 minutes on the nose. The second segment was 4 minutes long, so I had to cut 4 minutes of material in order to make the 28 minute line. I was one-millionth of a second short. :P
Doing an hour-long show was a little difficult without having some serious content; last time, we had an interview with Doctor Brown to fill for 12 of the necessary 27 minutes, and the other half of the segment was mostly about Anime Expo. This week, we read listener mails, and then did an old school/new school debate about anime in general. Though, to me, it sounded like we wandered off the point every minute or so, I guess the listeners didn’t care or didn’t notice. :) In the IRC channel for the radio station, I was chatting with listeners in real time, and it’s kind of nice to have that instant feedback to gauge the response.

For the record: I slept 14.5 hours last night. I guess all this sleep deprivation finally caught up with my body, because I went to sleep at 3pm Saturday and I did not wake up until 7am Sunday. I opened my eyes and saw morning and the first three words out of my mouth was, “What the fuck?”

Walk Back to Orange Road…

Posted by jetblack on July 23rd, 2004

I think it was back in the olden days I talk about a lot whenever I start talking about anime and how I got into it. In having to familarize myself with Kimagure Orange Road again lately (for the fifth episode of the radio show), I have sort of returned to that day when I realized exactly how awesome this series is and the memories it carries with it. This was back in the days before I got married; when I guess you could say I was innocent and naive. I was working at Acer’s technical support division back then, on the graveyard shift. I would work at night and then watch anime as I fell asleep during the day. This is how I watched Ranma, Tenchi, Gundam, Megamisama, Sailor Moon, and of course… Orange Road.

Orange Road continues to be one of the coolest and interesting stories I’ve seen in anime ever. Nothing comes close to this story insofar as plot, characters, or outcome. Sure, it tackles all the typical subplots, but even then, KOR is above all the rest in the manner in which it is employed. Not to mention that the characters are just amazing; I’ve been in love with Ayukawa Madoka since the first time I had seen her. And then there’s Jingoro… the poor cat that has to survive through the whole series. :) But more than that, there’s also the music. This series has some of the memorable music ever, from Natsu no Mirage to Kagami no naka no Actress and of course, Dance in the Sweet Memories.

And this is also the series that brought me Ushiko and Umao :)
I love being an anime fan. If only because KOR reminds me all that was once good with anime and can be again (apologies to Mr. Kinsella for the paraphrase). I’d like to think that as a fan, I appreciate this artform even more when I see KOR and remember everything that came with it.

OKCupid dot dot dot

Yes, I went a signed myself up at OKCupid at ’s behest. It’s actually not a bad site for a free one; I especially like the eharmony-esque algorhythms they use to calculate who your matches are. They literally ask you 500+ questions (some people answer in excess of 1000 questions) in order to get a feel of who you are by giving you multiple choices and then asking you how much importance you place on that question when looking for a potential mate.

Some of the questions are downright hilarious. :) My username there is the same as here. :) Feel free to add me as a friend.

The Week in Review…

Posted by jetblack on July 17th, 2004

We’re less than sixty days out from JTAF2, so my list of shit to do is looming large. I think I have a slightly easier time of it, now, though; a major sponsor stepped up recently and has taken on three of the insane parts of my publications duties. Don’t get me wrong, I still have to do all the content writing, but now I don’t have to make sure it gets printed and proofing. This makes me very happy, and I’m looking forward to a full-color 24-page book, rather than a black and white 12 page booklet.

Yesterday, I had a very productive meeting with the Merchants Association. Things are looking really good there. The president even bought me breakfast! :) We got all the in-mall spaces we need, and more information about how to pull off registration in the peace plaza (Megs, I’ll have to sit down with you about that). I got the information about the permits for this year, and they’re really excited about the opening ceremonies and the concert with Moulann and 13-37. Rich even got me an introduction to the people who own the Denny’s and they’re going to run a special for badged attendees of 10% off every order, which is going to be cool for the kids. I’ll be up in Jtown next week to talk to the restuarant owners and try to see if we can run some sort of across-the-board promotion for badged peeps, so I can put it in the coupon book I’m making up for this year. On top of everything else, I get to park in the garage for all of August with little cost! :)
Oh, and senior staffers: meeting will be WEEKLY in August. Sorry, but it’s GO time!

Pruning the List again…

Posted by jetblack on July 17th, 2004

I went through and removed some old communities and journals I don’t care to read anymore. This will probably be taken as an insult to those who got removed because it kind of sort of is. I think when all is said and done, personal journals are snapshots of people. Sometimes we groove really well with those people, and sometimes we don’t. Whether it be because their lives have taken them in a different direction and I just don’t hold any interest anymore, or maybe because some of you don’t update your journals anymore and probably won’t even read this. Love me, hate me, kiss me, kill me; I shocked everyone by paraphrasing a popular song, didn’t I?

To those who made the cut, you couldn’t care less. :P
