There's a new book, and we're gonna write it. You can win if you run a smart, disciplined campaign, if you studiously say nothing -- nothing that causes you trouble, nothing that's a gaffe, nothing that shows you might think the wrong thing, nothing that shows you think. But it just isn't worthy of us... It isn't worthy of us, it isn't worthy of America, it isn't worthy of a great nation. We're gonna write a new book, right here, right now. This very moment. Today.

Posted by jetblack on October 28th, 2004

Coding, Writing, Cutting…

Posted by jetblack on October 23rd, 2004

This week’s cut of Unwound is done, finally. Also, Ray managed to get us a sponsor for this week’s show that will be having us run a contest, giving away free copies of Samurai Warriors: Xtreme Legends. A game I reviewed for Animerica Magazine, which is entirely coincidental. I laughed pretty hard when Ray told me during the record session… I thought I was done with the game, but instead, it’s following me around to my other projects. Not that it’s a bad game… eh, pick up December’s Animerica to read what I thought of it.

I’ve been heavily coding stuff on a game these days. Before those of you who know of me from WNO, it’s not WNO2. In fact, we’re running into such a clusterfuck with the SBC/meer.net bullshit in getting our line reinstated that I’ve had to rechannel my coding skills over to a game called Stargate: SG-X. It’s an alternate universe Stargate-themed game, and I really think it’s going to take off. I’m rethinking the whole WNO2 thing and thinking I need to concentrate on a whole new game entirely. The other wizards involved with WNO2 are discussing the possilbility that due to the downtime and low motivation, to work on Sg-X instead. We’ll see what happens in the coming weeks, and we’ll also see exactly how long it is going to take SBC to actually do what they said they were going to do. Having no net access at home is pretty frustrating; it means no email coming in.

In the writing area, I’ve also been working pretty hard on Knight Commander. Recent events have forced me to take another hard look at my work and try a little harder in getting it done before Christmas. I think it’s doable, and especially with the recent support for my writing, I’m inspired to continue. Of course, this means that my works will be needing to come down from FictionPress.com, because there’s a strong possibility of selling the book to an actual publisher.

Also, I guess I did not notice until now, but welcome to my journal. It’s… not much.

Retirement

I have officially retired from the convention business. In short, I’ve quit my position(s) with JTAF, effective immediately. Any questions will be answered below.

Thanks.

I think this is where the metaphor gets lost…

A White Piece of Paper…

Posted by jetblack on October 11th, 2004

I always liked what Aaron Sorkin said about writing: “I love writing but hate starting. The page is awfully white and it says, ‘You may have fooled some of the people some of the time but those days are over, giftless. I’m not your agent and I’m not your mommy; I’m a white piece of paper, you wanna dance with me?’ and I really, really don’t. I’ll go peaceable-like.”

Truer words were never spoken. The white piece of paper always scares the hell out of me, too. I use little tricks to start marking up the white and feel a little better about it being all white and untouched. Put my name down, put a chapter title down, maybe write up a little scene-setting information like location, time and date… after a while, the writing starts and the paper gets less white and the fun happens. My problem with writing isn’t so much about getting started as it is about finishing the story. I think out of the projects I begun, a percentage of them have actually been completed. I have over 25 untitleds sitting in my directory right now, and none of them are anywhere near being completed. Isn’t that scary to look at? I go into that directory and try not to open them all, but curiousity gets the better of me, and then a post like this appears in my livejournal.

When I look into some of the ones I’ve forgotten, I also seem to not remember writing it. It’s almost as if I’m reading something someone else wrote, because it seemed so long ago that I don’t even recall what inspired it in the first place. I hate that feeling. I look at it and I think to myself, “When in hell did I write this?” Sometimes, it’s not even just like a little one-pager, either… I found an untitled with 14 pages of writing done and no idea how it got there in the first place. Am I going senile? Or was it another one of those middle-of-the-night writing fits I find myself in? I honestly have very little idea, and right now, I would like to get one of my novels completed so I can cross it off my to-do list in life.

Trimming the List

I made yet another small trim to my friends’ list. This only affected those people who haven’t posted in over a year, so don’t worry. :)
