So how do you feel about the tech market nowadays? There’s always the influx of people looking to be a hot new programmer or sysadmin, and the “glory” of being in the tech field, along with the supposedly huge wages.
Do you feel this is a justified image, or is this one that’s held over from the dot com boom that needs to be retired?

The first would’ve been your age, but that was easily answered on my own.
1. How long have you been writing for Animerica? I was randomly flipping through the newest issue of the magazine at the bookstore recently, and was pleasantly surprised to see you listed in the contributing writers (it was like, “Ah! I know him!” o_O)
2. I noticed you have Ani DiFranco on your list of interests, which is cool because I adore Ani. So I’m wondering if you like her music, and if so what you like most about it. ^^

This changes from time to time. I am a self-declared movie buff, and I’ve watched a great deal of movies (I get the buffness from my mother, who is a bigger buff). I have more like a rotating top fifty movies I would stop whatever I was doing and watch.

1. I started writing for Animerica in August, when Urian Brown asked me for a favor to help him out when another one of his freelancers flaked. I’ve been writing for them every month since, and I’m about to write yet another tonight for January’s issue. I heard the review I wrote for October got bumped to November, though.. which sucks, because it was moe appropriate for the Halloween issue (Tea Society of a Witch).
2. I do like her music, but more because it reminds me of someone in my life who meant a great deal to me. Ani’s music is something that’s associated with my failed marriage, and although she and I don’t speak anymore, it was her absolutely her most favorite musician. It took me a while, but Ani grows on you, and now I appreciate what she’s saying after having gone through a pretty bad heartbreak.

I’ve been involved with the tech industry since 1994. In ten years, I’ve learned that like show business, the tech industry is a harsh bitch goddess. There’s always an influx of people looking to be the next big thing in technology, but that’s because of how easy it is to integrate new technology into existing ones. You’ll find that most new advances are improvements over existing products, and entirely new products have a difficult time breaking into the market, if only because it either ignores accepted standards or requires companies/firms to go against the current tide. I think that’s why OS/2 had such a hard time with breaking into the Windows-dominated market, but why RedHat flourished by offering a real alternative.
Is there glory in the tech market? I guess it depends on what kind of glory you’re thinking of. I see glory in people who give up everything to make sure a company stays afloat, including their social lives and relationships, even marriages. I can feel their frustration when they come out of it with nothing, but there’s more glory to when they succeed. It’s pretty rare these days, but when it happens, you can’t help but have a little hope/faith restored.
I’ve had my share of crap; been laid off from three companies (Acer America, Certainty Solutions, and eBay). I remember hearing a rumor going around about some guy who was deliberately trying to get hired at firms that were about to die to rack up severence pay; that’s how bad things were for a while. 🙂
I would love to do something that could cover me financially and something I love to do. I’m done with the tech industry. Writing for Animerica is a step in the right direction, but it barely covers my cell phone bill per month, and that’s if I get paid per month (which I don’t).
