This country is an idea, and one that’s lit the world for two centuries and treason against that idea is not just a crime against the living! This ground holds the graves of people who died for it; who gave what Lincoln called the last full measure of devotion... of fidelity.

Back from the East Coast

Posted by jetblack on February 28th, 2005

So, Philadelphia was pretty interesting. I stayed at Abbie’s place for most of the two weeks I was there, and to be honest, although I had a passing desire to go and see some sights, I was pretty content to adopt a regimen of sleeping, eating, watching TV/DVDs, writing, and then back to sleeping. I got to know three pretty amazing series, like Firefly, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Greg the Bunny. I pretty much have gone fanboy all over Firefly, as you can tell from my new LJ layout, and as soon as I got home, we picked up the DVD collection at Fry’s for a decent price. Me likey Firefly, Me likey Firefly.

I got to see the crappy movie that was Constantine on last Sunday, and after seeing that, I realized that I can’t ask for a refund on time lost. I want that 90 minutes of my life back, damn it. It was horrid, and the only reason I did not walk out was because I didn’t drive there. I tolerate Keanu Reeves to a point, but even the hottie that is Rachel Weisz couldn’t save that stinkbomb. Yikes. What saved the day for me was the premeire of Robot Chicken. It’s basically got your old action figures, voiced by Seth Green, Rachel Leigh Cook, Macaulay Culkin, Seth MacFarlane, Alex Borstein, Kurtwood Smith… it’s amazing. I looked down the schedule they’ll even have Mark Hamill doing the Luke Skywalker voice! Awesome. On Friday night, Abbie took me to see an American Hockey League game; the Philadelphia Phantoms versus the Hershey Bears. I’ve never seen so many penalties in an NHL game… the Phantoms are fucking brutal on the ice. Again, it was very awesome.

The flight back home was excrutiatingly painful, because my lower back hurt and was causing my legs to spasm a little. I forced myself to stay awake all night long to try and tire myself out for the flight home, and I ended up sleeping through a majority of the flight, though there was this one part during the 6 hour flight from Philly to Los Angeles that I wrote in an entry I never posted:

I fell asleep no more than twenty minutes after we reached cruising altitude, and lost track of how long we’ve been in the air. Although there are children seated in front of me and across the row, what woke me up was the plane’s PA system crackling to life and the pilot saying, “Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. This is the pilot, speaking.” And I thought, awesome; he’s going to tell us we’re starting our descent! The pilot went on to say, “If you will look outside your windows, you will see Kansas City, Missouri below us right now. We’ve just completed the half-way point of our flight and should be arriving in Los Angeles in three hours.” Everyone groaned, because I guess they thought we were going to be landing at LAX. I laughed, wrote this entry and now I’m going back to my nap.

Well, it was funny at the time. They never even offered me a pillow, either. I just slept with my head against the side of the plane, next to the window and drooled. I know this, because I woke up and felt very cool air on my face and there was this girl sitting next to me with an amused expression on her face. Oh well, whoopty shit.. she was getting off at LAX to go home, if I recall the conversation correctly. Like I would even be interested in someone who STEALS MY WATER. All you SoCal’ers can go to hell for stealing my water!!! < jk :)> I love SoCal. I go down to Anime Expo every year. :) Uh, anyway… I had a 1.5 hour layover at LAX, which sucked because LAX is like one of the worst airports ever. I’m just thankful I didn’t have to move from one whole terminal to the next, like I did when I flew to Maui. We literally had to race from one American terminal to the other. Gah. Another story for another time.

Fell asleep on the plane to San Jose. Now, we start our descent and I’m watching the ground get closer. We’re flying over some familiar stuff, like San Jose Municipal Stadium. Now, Muni is where the San Jose Giants play, and I swear I saw baseball being played over there. I was sitting in a row with someone who wasn’t very talkative to a drooly sleeping person, but I was so excited to see baseball being played! I bounced in my seat like a little kid, because it meant that baseball season was fast approaching, and suddenly I was so happy to be home.. moreso than I was before. Philadelphia kind of grows on you, but I think that had more to do with the fact that I SuperUltraHyperLazy Guy than anything else. I would love to do nothing but sit on my ass and watch Cartoon Network all day and all night, but eh… I would rather write my damn novel. :)
As the plane is getting closer to land at San Jose International, I’m noticing something odd. The tail of the plane is wobbling from side to side, like the pilots are fucking around with the peddles that control the yaw of the plane. We’re about to touch down and the plane’s left side is going to hit first. Also, we’re coming down much faster than I’d like. So, my body goes tense, everyone yelps a little in surprise when the plane touches down on the left first and then the right, making it less smooth than your normal landings. My ass finally unclenched when the plane came to a complete stop. and picked me up in my car and then we went to Fry’s, where I bullied into buying Firefly. He bought, for the record: PUNKY BREWSTER SECOND SEASON. Yeah… I’m programming the DVD player to parental lock all G-rated crap, now. He watched the first season so much, I had the opening song spackled into my brain.

I fell asleep shortly thereafter, because I couldn’t stay awake anymore.. and then I woke up at fuckin’ 4am. Ugh. I forced myself back to sleep at 6am, because my boss rescheduled me for work at noon until midnight.

There you go.. my week in a nutshell… or not.

Finished Chapter Eight and started Chapter Nine. Hope to have a good chunk of nine done today and ten started. Also completed Interlude Two, which means two-thirds of the book is almost done and leave five or six more chapters before I complete this thing. I will prolly be adding a high word count later, if it doesn’t look like 75,000 words will cut it.

Jya ne, Queen of Wands…

Queen of Wands

I stumbled upon Queen of Wands while clicking on links from Randy’s Something Positive site. It was one of those late nights at work when you’re looking for something to read after all your usual webcomics finished updating, and based on some of the comments I had seen within the ultra-glamorous livejournal community, I started reading the archives that night. Needless to say, after a month’s worth of reading, I was hooked pretty badly. When I got to the end of the archive and had to wait for new ones to show up, I was pretty annoyed. I wanted instant gratification, damn it!

Queen of Wands’ appeal went beyond its glib commentary and sometimes over-the-top situations; the ability to write characters that endear themselves to the reader in a minimal amount of time is something to applaud on its own merit, let alone the actual characters themselves. Pretty soon, you start vesting yourself in the characters, caring about what happens to them, and empathizing with the sometimes-traumatic emotional scars they suffer through. Weaving characters with depth without departing the realm of believability (too much), while maintaining a light-heartedness is not easy. As I’m sitting here in Philadelphia and trying to finish a novel I started two years ago, I’m thinking that Aeire’s talent for soaking up her writing with real emotion is something I wish I could do in my own pursuits.

Reading the comic daily and weekly, I leaped headfirst into fandom, and I ended up joining the QoW LJ Community as well. I even suggested inviting Aeire to JTAF2, and imagine my surprise when she accepted. It was a cool weekend to make new friends, even though I was stuck in ConOps all the time. I really am a QoW reader… and today is the last day it will update. That’s right, Queen of Wands has ended.

So, this post in my LJ is just a big heartfelt thank you to Aeire; for the years of invoking the extreme emotions in me. I’m never going to forget Queen of Wands, and I’m missing Kestrel and the gang already.

Finished Chapter Seven and started Chapter Eight. I can’t beleive I did over six thousand words, but I hit yet another really awesome groove in the story and just ran with it. It wasn’t without its waste, though, because I did delete a scene that ended up going nowhere after a few attempts at exploring it. Also, if you want to read what I’ve been up to, the edited chapters are in storage at my FictionPress account right here. There’s up to Chapter Six right now. Those chapters will be going bye-bye as soon as the book is finished, though, so read now while you can.

I only have four days left to finish this, and at the rate I’ve been typing, I think I can at least finish two-thirds of the book before I leave, which is a big chunk of it out of the way. The problem is, how do I focus on it when I get home? I’ll have to figure something out, I guess.

Sunday was an interesting day. The snow fell, I saw Constantine, she cooked a turkey dinner which was awesome, and then I settled in to write (but not necessarily all in that order). Before all that, I was frantically cutting and uploading U203 for Unwound’s broadcast that night. I forgot to do it all week while writing and having fun… meh.

Finished Chapter Six and added a page to Chapter Seven in the hopes of finishing today and starting Chapter Eight (and maybe finishing it). I’d like to get back up to around 5 thousand words a day. Also, I’m thinking that at this rate, 75,000 words isn’t going to be my total for this book.

New Theme!

Take a look. Went crazy with Firefly, this time around, borrowing elements from ’s Giants theme she’d done up for me.

Started Chapter Seven, which is a big deal because that’s when some serious action takes place. Even though it looks like I went from 37 to 39k, we finished editing last night and I lost a thousand words roughly… so in actuality, I wrote over three thousand words. :) Yay!

Now this is more like it. Editing as we go along, but being able to break at least 2,000 words in a single day is a good roll. I’m feeling much better about the flow of the story, and hope to have Chapter Seven started tomorrow night.
