Today is the First Day of the Rest of My Life

So, I have decided to step up my efforts to trim down. When I say step up, I mean cutting out beef for a while, cutting back on certain indulgences, and infusing more greens into my diet (yes, I mean actual greens). No more pizza, no more fast food (except the breakfast I had). I’d like to devote an hour a day toward exercising, whether it be walking or swimming or whatever.

If you’re reading this, then I’m looking for support, suggestions, and the like from you. It’s not going to be easy, and I may fall along the way. So, I need your help.

Thanks.

    Walk. Anywhere and everywhere.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 13:27

I would walk to work, but then I wouldn’t get there until tomorrow πŸ™‚ But I avoid the elevators unless I’m carrying equipment.

Increasing my water and healthy liquid intake (unsweetened tea, lowfat milk, etc.) and cutting out sugar has helped a lot for me. I’m stabilizing around 125 these days thanks to the changes I’ve made.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 13:32

Does diet soda work or is that a step in the wrong direction?

    • maggiesox on August 1, 2005 at 13:32

Well, okay, but if you have a lunch break, and you can, go out and walk around a bit. The summer is perfect for that.

JOIN ME IN THE QUEST TO LOSE WEIGHT. although i know we already discussed that our goals are a bit different, we’re still aiming for the same thing. eat well balanced meals, at least 3 servings of good dairy per day (it’s known to burn calories better), and do a good combo of cardio and muscle building workouts.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 13:33

Crap, I just worked through my lunch break, too. I have the next two days off, though. I think I’ll use the free time to do stuff.

    • new_world_smurf on August 1, 2005 at 13:34

Awesome. Walking, veggies and water are your friends.

    • backroomdealer on August 1, 2005 at 13:35

While I’m probably closer to work than you are, I also try to go for a good mile or two after work. I can’t run because I’m asthmatic, but get your mp3 player out, load up some tunes and just ignore everyone by going for a good walk for a while. An hour a day worked for me, I’ve been doing this since January.

If walking to work’s not an option, I say just walk everywhere else you can and take the longer routes to do it.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 13:36

My goal is to drop 50 pounds in eight months.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 13:36

Water is something I don’t get enough of πŸ™‚

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 13:38

    Man, I need an mp3 player. πŸ™‚

    • mslauren2930 on August 1, 2005 at 13:44

like what everyone else said: walking, drink more water, eat breakfast (that’ll fill you up early in the day so you won’t be as hungry later in the day), fruit (I eat bananas regularly and other fruits, because I’m not much with the veggies). if I can think of anything else, I’ll let you know.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 13:46

I love bananas. πŸ™‚ But I also love broccoli and I’m beginning to like spinach (to a degree).

    • backroomdealer on August 1, 2005 at 13:46

I highly advise it, it’s great therapy just to go walk and ignore everyone.

It may be the current cause of my recent hearing loss, but I don’t care, haha.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 13:48

LOL. I’ll see if I can’t find a cheap one.

    • deathbytamarind on August 1, 2005 at 13:49

It suffices when you really need a soda. Truthfully diet soda isn’t so good for you either but it doesn’t have sugar, carbs, sodium and other things that can cause you to gain weight. If weight loss is what you’re going for, then diet soda is okay. Diet sodas I prefer are Diet Coke with Lime, Diet Cherry Coke, Diet Vanilla Coke–basically any Diet Coke other than Diet Coke itself, heh. Diet Rite peach and raspberry are both excellent. Diet Squirt is good, and Diet A&W cream and root beer aren’t bad either.

So you have options. As far as what the proper liquid intake is, it depends on your weight and size. 64 oz is recommended but how could someone my size handle all that? I went overboard with the water a few years ago and almost made myself sick. Eight eight ounce glasses per day=64 oz, and most of the things I drink I measure by servings, like my morning tea is 20 oz, two servings, etc.

Watching the serving sizes is another good way to lose weight. It’ll be hard to adjust to and you need to go easy with it. Most meals at restaurants are like two or three servings, so you’re eating enough for your whole day in one sitting. Not good.

Snacking on stuff like whole wheat bread, granola, low fat string cheese, fruit, popcorn, etc. is a good way to keep the munchies from sabotaging you. and try to find good sugar free ice cream and other treats–they exist. Trader Joe’s is the haven for finding healthy items that taste good too.

I like the new Diet coke with splenda. It doesn’t taste as harsh as regular diet coke. I’m trying to switch to that.

I love granola and fruit. I could also snack on carrots. I love baby carrots.

You’ll be burning lots of calories by being dragged around for various wedding-related activities. :p

I already told you that I’ll keep you on track. Yes, you may falter here and there, but you have lots and lots of support.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 14:00

It helps when I think it’s a group effort πŸ™‚ For some reason, it gets a little easier than trying to go it alone.

    • deathbytamarind on August 1, 2005 at 14:05

Getting all the tempting foods out of the house and installing good stuff to snack on is the best way to go. If you know it’s there you’ll want it, and if it’s not there and if you want something to gnaw on, you have to eat the good snacks. And if you’re lazy like me you won’t get out of the house to go get it, heh.

Fruit is high in sugar, but it’s natural sugar. Still you should watch it with the fruit, especially juice. Juice is bad because it has a ton of sugar. They say five servings a day but then again a serving is one small apple, one banana, a handful of grapes…etc. it all goes back to controlling the portion size.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 14:06

Getting them out would be great if I lived alone.

Yeah, portion control should definitely enter into it for sure. I’ve been trying my best to exercise that lately.

I went to WalMart and got the biggest freaking jug I could find. It’s 64 ounces and it has a lot of interesting facts about water on it. I drink 2 of these a day – I’ve stopped drinking anything but water.

It wasn’t easy at first, but now I crave it. If you don’t like the taste of water, I suggest putting a shitload of ice in there to make it really cold – it’ll lose it’s taste and just feel icy in your mouth. Yum!

I fully support you and your effort. I’m trying to do the same thing myself.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 14:12

    Thanks, Lisa. Most helpful πŸ™‚

I also have a great reason to restrict what enters my kitchen: my grandmother’s health as well.

So get an old lady who sneaks cookies in, then bawl her out when you find them. And eat them anyway. Ha.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 14:12

LOL. I’m sure I can find one down at the local old lady store. πŸ™‚

I’m stepping up mine as well so hopefully we’ll help each other along the way. Now that I work way the hell out here in Northbay I’ll be biking every day after work. I found a really good used mountain bike on Craigslist (50.00) and I’m super excited about using it now.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 14:32

I have a bike, but damn it hurts to ride it. I’m just too fat.

    • sweetmegumi on August 1, 2005 at 14:36

Yes it does hurt to ride *rubs tush*. Went for that 2, 3 mile ride with Mitch yesterday and my back end is really sore from the seat. I guess one needs to try to get use to it. I’ll let you know how the status of my rear is in the next few weeks.

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 14:37

Yes. I’m looking forward to Rear End Update. πŸ™‚

    • getbacknow on August 1, 2005 at 15:53

Oh, congrats on getting started! Fitday sounds like a great idea for me too, so let’s check in with each other and berate each other when we have bad days. How did you develop your plan for 50lbs/8months? Do you think it’s feasible?

    • jetblack on August 1, 2005 at 16:45

It’s about 1 pound and a half per week, which is what I’d like to do. I figure when I reduce my sodium intake, I’m going to drop water weight like crazy at first, and then plateau when I’m working off the flub.
