I’m 37 minutes from home…

Posted by jetblack on September 30th, 2005

So, I just got done watching the fansubbed version of Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, and oh my fucking god, was it simply amazing. I may have to steal a line from Jody and just say that this should be the only Final Fantasy movie in existance. If they did this instead of The Spirits Within, maybe Square Pictures would still be around. I didn’t even play FF7 all the way through and it was still awesome.

Anyway, I have returned to San Jose, and everything feels all foreign and shit. Though, I sat back down in my chair at my desk and I realized that I missed my desk and my 19 inch LCD screen. I may even play one of those fancy PC games that won’t run on a Mac (yeah, I said it). I brought a whole mess of laundry with me, and I’ll prolly be dropping it off tomorrow morning at the wash’n'fold place because I’m too lazy to do it myself. I don’t care if it runs me around $14, they wash and fold it and then they give it back in a nice plastic bag thing. It’s fucking cool.

Today was my last day at Walmart.com (as a NOC monkey). My boss told me that he may ask me to do contract work for him on the weekends (as a tech writer, not a NOC monkey), but it wouldn’t start until after the 15th, which is fine by me. I need a fucking break, and I want to be able to spend more time with Julia. The one thing that was driving me crazy a little bit was that she works weekends and I work weekdays, so unless I pulled a shorttimer privilege and go home early or take a day off, we’re limited to after I get home and before she goes to sleep. Also, when we wake up and I drop her about an hour before my shift starts. This is no longer the case… until I find a new job.

Which brings me to my next point. I think sometimes it’s a little jinxy to talk about job prospects, but I have three possibilities right now. Two in the city, one in Mountain View. I really want one of the two in the city, because both are within the limits of my expertise in technology, but the one in Mountain View requires some blood and tears to get done (from the description). Plus, there’s the added hassle of moving back down to the South Bay after having already transferred some of my things up to Julia’s place. I’m sort of in a wait-and-see mode right now, because I need to find out if I even get the jobs in the first place. Wish me luck on those fronts, because I’d really like to go back to work before my unemployment starts to eat away my money to nothing.

Serenity opened today, and no I did not go see it tonight. I wanted to, but I saw Advent Children instead. I’ll be going this weekend sometime for sure, because I want to contribute to the opening weekend numbers. :)

There’s no place I can be, since I’ve found Serenity… but you can’t take the sky from me.

Oh, for fuck’s sake…

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Labor unions representing most of the nation’s 90,000 flight attendants have urged their members to boycott a new Jodie Foster film that portrays a flight attendant and a U.S. air marshal as terrorists.

They said that casting cabin crew members as villains in the movie “Flightplan” was irresponsible in light of heightened security concerns since the September 11, 2001 attacks, in which suicide hijackers used airliners as guided missiles.

The Walt Disney Co. film, which was the No. 1 release at the North American box office last weekend, stars Foster as an airline passenger who awakens from an in-flight nap to find her young daughter missing. It turns out that one of the flight attendants aboard is involved in a terrorist plot hatched by the plane’s air marshal.

A union statement issued on Tuesday also complained that other flight attendants in the film are shown as being “rude, unhelpful and uncaring.”

“This depiction of flight attendants is an outrage,” said Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) International President Patricia Friend. “Flight attendants continue to be the first line of defense on an aircraft and put their lives on the line day after day for the safety of passengers.”

An AFA spokeswoman in Washington said the unions worry that moviegoers will take away impressions that will make it more difficult for flight attendants to “earn the trust and respect of passengers.”

“It’s just so irresponsible,” the spokeswoman, Corey Caldwell, told Reuters on Wednesday.

She said the portrayal of airline cabin crew members as evil-doers adds further insult to long-standing Hollywood stereotypes that have depicted flight attendants as sexualized bubble heads or as harsh, humorless disciplinarians.

A Disney spokesman said that in making “Flightplan,” which grossed nearly $25 million last weekend, “there was absolutely no intention on the part of the studio or filmmakers to create anything but a great action thriller.”

“We are confident the public will be able to discern the difference between fiction and the incredible job real-life flight attendants do on a daily basis,” the spokesman said.

The AFA called for the boycott along with two sister unions — the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) and the Transport Workers Union Local 556, which represent cabin crew members from American Airlines and Southwest Airlines, respectively. The three unions together represent 80,000 of the 90,000 flight attendants who work for U.S. carriers.

Yeah, okay. Four words: IT’S A FUCKING MOVIE. I’m sure in the last fifty years, there was this time when people couldn’t fucking tell reality from fantasy, with all the actor-doctors promoting cigarettes and such, but here in the 21st century, your average joe knows that real flight attendants are not like the ones in the MOVIE. I stress MOVIE, because fiction is not reality. I don’t think people are having as much of a problem with telling the difference as the AFA apparently is.

Happy Birthday!

Wow.

Now that was a really good fucking game of catch. My arms feel like jello, and I think I hurt my knee diving for a ball, but damn that was fun.

Oh, for those that don’t know, I bought a couple of mitts for Julia and I, and we tossed the ball around. Today, for my last one-on-one with my boss, I took the mitts and a ball with me to work and while we talked we tossed the ball around for an hour. I think I lost count at 60 tosses, but we had a lot of fun. He said, “If only all our one-on-ones were that fun.”

Things on the work front have been somewhat in a state of flux. I’ve been looking for work these past two months, and I don’t really want to get into it, but I’ve got some interviews lined up for this coming week. For those unaware, so far, I gave notice here and my last day is next Friday. After a year and seven months, I am finally through with this place and it’s frustrating bullshit. If at the very least, I’ll take a week off before starting any new gigs, and I hope that my interviews go well. Two of the prospects are in the city and one is in the south bay, but we’ll see what happens.

I don’t like being unemployed, but I also don’t like being insanely frustrated with my job and the people I work with.
