Can I tell you something? Josh has asked me to work Saturdays, work Sundays, and at least once a week he has me there after 1:00 AM. He's asked me to transpose portions of the federal budget into base-8, go to North Dakota and dress as an East German cocktail waitress. In five years of working for him, he's never asked me to hide him from something. Can I have my boss's phone back?

First Day on the Job… post-game wrap

Posted by jetblack on January 31st, 2006

This was posted after a three hour nap.

My first day was weird at first, because working for a start-up is a seriously fucked-up method of returning to work after a four month period of not working. Honestly, I quit my job on September 30th of last year and on January 30th of this year I’m back. Um, so anyway, the first thing I had to do was build my own machine using the parts they ordered for me, and configure it to my specifications. The big problem with that was that after I got Windows XP Pro running, I was pretty much stymied because the windows administrator was in a meeting until way later in the day and I had to wait for my account to be created, so I waited… doing nothing but just trying not to play solitaire. I couldn’t be look through documentation until I had access to the network, but since my boss was in the same meeting, it wasn’t like I was going to be painted with the idle brush unnecessarily.

After I got my access, the huge debacle ended up being the damned VoIP phone system they use over there. For those that don’t know, Transera is an internet telephony solution for call centers, so we use our own technology but passing voice over IP as a means for communicating with the outside world. Oh, and even though every has extensions at their desk, absolutely no one calls anyone on them. This company loves to come up to your desk and get your full attention. So far, I’m so new that this fact wasn’t a problem in the beginning, but we’ll revisit that in a bit. The major problem with the phone was that it wasn’t being fed any power… neither from the wall jack nor the fucking AC adapter I plugged in. At first, I thought it was the adapter being crappy and then the power port on the cube wall might not have been hooked up, but moving the monitor to it eliminated that possibility. Then I noticed that the power plugs into the same cat 5 cable that the voice uses… and I asked the VoIP expert, “Wouldn’t you need to plug the voice cable into the wall to complete the power circuit?” He said, “No.” I frowned and insisted we just test my theory on a hunch (basic electronics coming to mind), and of course, once the voice cable was in the wall, my phone amazingly had power. I had arrived at 9am that morning, and my phone was working at noon. Also, for my trouble… I have no direct line. You have to call the main number and get transferred. And the extension number on my phone’s display is not the ‘real’ extension.. it’s an internal virtual extension so others can use the intercom to get me… and as I said, no one uses that system anyway. What a fucked up phone system.

Due to the fact that I had three hours of sleep (and I might be headed for a repeat of that tonight), I found it incredibly hard to focus. I had no food that morning and gave me a little bit of money to buy my lunch on the first day. Also, my new boss said she wanted to have lunch with me, but Monday was a meeting-intense day for her so she had zero time to really do much but get me settled in in the morning and hand me parts to put together. But, she was kind enough to walk me around and let me use her badge to get food… so I walked over to this place called Mandarin Gourmet which was right next door and placed a quick order. They offered to deliver the food to me in about 25 minutes and since I needed to go back to my desk anyway, I took them up on it. Dude, their lemon chicken is motherfuckin’ tasty. Awesome food even though it cost me near ten dollars. Plus, having free soda at all times is a dangerous thing for me, so I’ve decided to take iced tea with me to work starting tomorrow. I ate, and then got handed like two projects right away.

Even though I didn’t get the operations manager position, I’m being groomed for it and I can totaly tell right now that they have major plans for me soon. The current interim ops manager is a really nice guy named Shankar who is also the engineering manager and a developer wrangler, as well as the QA coordinator. He wears four hats, including ops… and now that I’m there, he is hot to trot on getting me to handle all ops issues so he won’t have to. Remember when I said that people like to come up on you in your cube while you’re trying to work? Okay, I now am responsible for a) taking all tier 1 noc calls and b) analyzing the tier 1 response system for streamlining. These are both high visibility projects, I shit you not, because suddenly people knew who I was. Before, I was like a bug on the kitchen tile; people would walk by and peer into my cube, but maybe one in fifteen would stop and introduce themselves to me. Anyway, I think Shankar pointed people in my direction because that stat went from 1 in 15, to like 15 in 15.

I so need a fucking cube door.

I looked through the ultra-shitty document they’ve been using thus far, and started designing a new doc formula to make things easier on everyone reading it. It was about that time that I realized that the non-ergonomic keyboard was beginning to really kill my wrists and I asked my new boss, “Can I order things?” She said, “Sure, you have authority to order what you need to get the job done… just don’t go crazy. What did you have in mind?” I said that I wanted a new keyboard, a trackball, and a headset for starters. She seemed to understand immediately and asked her exec assistant to see to it right away. Hopefully, I’ll have those things by Wednesday, because writing all those emails sucked ass. Plus, I hate mice with a passion. Trackballs rule all.

By the end of the day, I could barely keep my eyes open and I left 30 minutes early (I know, bad). I needed new clothes for work, man. I have a grand total of two dress shirts and two slacks, and I’m so not used to wearing those types of clothes on a daily basis. I cannot wait for casual Friday, when my denim shorts are okay. Julia and I stalked over to the store and picked up two shirts that look nice, to add them into the ‘rotation.’ As soon as I get paid, I have this feeling that a significant amount of money will be spent on getting similiar work clothing. The cool part is, I get to write it off as a business expense, because let’s face it… where the fuck else am I going to wear this shit? I’m a t-shirt/shorts kind of guy, and I’m so going to ask if I can get away wearing that to work instead.

With one full day completed, I can say that there’s a lot of good and bad so far. But quite honestly, I’m seeing an opportunity to really spread my wings out to get this work done and make a substantive contribution as they want me to. I’m hoping this company doesn’t go the way of a high percentage of start-ups and die within a year, too. That would be cool, to actually be a part of a start-up that can be called a success.

First day on the job…

Posted by jetblack on January 30th, 2006

So, here I am, sitting in my cubical at Transera. I’ve been here for nearly three hours and most of what I’ve done so far is assemble my brand-new desktop machine, install my own VoIP phone, and request supplies and equipment from the group executive assistant. My new boss has given me something of a major goal to start working toward but I’m nowhere near equipped to start moving on it. I’m also operating on three hours of sleep total and without breakfast, but I intend to rectify the latter by walking around the immediate area and finding me someplace to pick up something to eat before I faint.

I had intended to write something before I left, but I never got around to it. Oh, well…

New Phone, New Job, New Life

Posted by jetblack on January 26th, 2006

Okay, well, no so much with the last part…

I did get a new phone and then I got a new job, though. The number for this phone shall be placed in a protected post later… but I like my new phone a little better than my old one because it does true tones and my old one did only poly. Also it has a camera on it, and I took a picture of ’s rack and it’s now my wallpaper. It was her idea, but now I love opening my phone.

I will be starting my new job at Transera on Monday where I have been told that I shall be worked really hard. That’s fine by me, especially after all my references said that they were checked out thoroughly (each of them had to fill out a 15-question essay form about me). One of them told me that they hoped I got the job because they weren’t going through that for me ever again. The job is basically what I’ve been doing for the past 6 years; Operations. But now my salary is way higher than normal so hey… I’m all for it. Finally I’m making the kind of money I’ve only fantasized about. This is good because I want to make enough to support the both of us until after the wedding so Julia doesn’t have to work (doing all the planning for the wedding is enough of an occupation, I think). All that’s left now is signing the paperwork, at this point.

How long before pitchers and catchers report to spring training? I miss baseball.

Meme Alert: ganked from <lj user=”maggiesox”>…

Posted by jetblack on January 20th, 2006

1) Where did you graduate from and what year?
I went to Branham High originally, but it closed after my freshman year :(. I transferred to and graduated from Leigh High School in 1994.

2) Did you have school pride?
Not really. I left that to the cheerleaders and boosters.

3) Best Dance Ever?
It’s a toss-up between Junior Prom and Senior Ball. Junior Prom I went with this awesome girl, Jaime, who I was always wanting to go out with, and ended up spending the night at her place (on the couch). My mom got ultra-worried because I didn’t call and she ended up tracking me down at her place. As soon as I got home, I went right to bed and my dad had to hold back my mom from throttling me for being so inconsiderate. Thank you, Dad. For Senior Ball, I invited a friend of mine who was a junior in college at the time, Julie. She dressed to slay and did so. There were some reprecussions from that later… see other meme (100 things about me you didn’t know).

4) Do you own all 4 Yearbooks?
Sadly, no. My sophomore yearbook was ripped off.

5) What was the worst trouble you ever got into?
Almost didn’t graduate because I cut Economics the entire semester and had to go to night school to make it up with time to spare :) Found out I actually liked Econ. I never got into trouble for going off-campus in spite of Leigh being a closed campus, I even walked onto school grounds in full view of our principal carrying a McDonald’s bag. As my buddy (who drove) shat himself, the principal asked me if I brought back anything for him… so I gave him my fries. He let me by and I went back to school. :)
6) What kind of people did you hang out with?
Band geeks, choir nerds… though, at my high school (a performing arts magnet), band and choir weren’t really considered geeky.

7) What was your number 1 choice of College in HS?
Oddly enough, I had a different college every year. My freshman year, I wanted to go to UCLA. My sophomore year, it was San Jose State. My junior year, it was UCSB, and my senior year, I realy really wanted to go to UOP (University of the Pacific). I ended up going to West Valley Community, instead :P
8) What radio station did you jam out to in highschool?
I didn’t really jam to it, but KNBR. Occasionally KARA and KEZR.

9) Were you involved in any organizations or clubs?
Spanish Club Vice-President (jr) and President (sr), founded the school’s SADD chapter, stage managed two shows for the fall drama plays, acted in the spring musicals, taught the fresh-soph all-girls choir my senior year. I played Badminton, and I was first chair for the varisty Chess team. Yes, I got a letter for Chess. Bite me.

10) What were your favorite classes in High School?
Literature, History, Choir, and Marching Band.

11) Who was your big crush in High School?
I did not really have a big crush until my senior year. But we did date, and I think I overwhelmed her because she was the first person I actually realized that I loved. She broke up with me about a month after we decided to start seeing each other.

12) Would you say you’ve changed a lot since high school?
Dramatically.

13) What do you miss the most about it?
Not a whole lot. I think maybe the opportunity to sing every day and play an instrument every day… so choir and band foremost. The musicals were fun, too.

14) Your worst memory of HS?
Going through the drama of my parents separating during my junior year.

15) Did you have a car?
No… I didn’t gank the family car until I turned 18 and no longer needed my parents’ permission to get a license. I had a bike for everywhere else before then.

16) What were your school colors?
Green and Gold for Leigh, and Blue and White for Branham.

17) Who were your favorite teachers?
Mr. Neff and Mrs. Ward from choir, both of them were incredibly supportive of me pursuing my vocal training. I feel bad that I didn’t. Ms. Cortese for Spanish, who I crushed on and was really friendly (professionally). Mr. Fisher for Biology, who was hilariously funny and fondly remembered by everyone at Leigh and Branham. Mr. Smith, the chess team coach and physics teacher.

18) Did you own a cell phone in highschool?
In 1994? Um, no. I did have a pager, though.

19) Did you leave campus for lunch?
When my buddy Paul got his license and a car, hell yes.

20) If so, where was your fav. place to go eat?
McDonald’s and Taco Bell… because we only had 35 minutes and they were the closest.

21) Were you always late to class?
No. I worked out a system to make sure I was in my seat with time to spare… not. I was mostly on time… the only times I was early was when Todd and I would spend lunch in a classroom that I had class in right after… playing rummy.

22) Did you ever have to stay for Saturday School?
There was no Saturday School. That was only in the Breakfast Club.

23) Did you ever ditch?
Yes, but mostly during my senior year. For full days, I would have my friend Andy call up the office as my “Uncle Nacho” and he would get me excused anytime he wanted to hang with me for the day. My dad and mom never found out that he did that a lot. :)
24) When it comes time for the reunion will you be there?
My 5 and 10-year reunions came and went and seemed to survive without my presence. I might go to the 15.

25) Do you wish you were still in high school?
Super hell no.

Once again…

If you don’t know the storyline, then go to the beginning and learn it. It’s worth it if you’ve nothing to do at work today. :)

All Thing Beings Equal…

Posted by jetblack on January 14th, 2006

… I would be gainfully employed and have my own place right now. Interestingly enough, half of it is true. Yes, friends, it’s true; I’m moved back to San Jose effective last week. Julia has also moved down and we’ll be occupying the apartment after Todd, Jody, and Mel all move out by the end of February. After spending the last five months in San Francisco, especially with the no-money/no-job situation, it seemed like a good idea to come back. So, here I am, sitting at my old desk in my (our) room, typing this out like I’ve always been.

On the job front, I don’t want to jinx this, but there’s a strong possibility on the horizon… so just keep your eyes here for more news.
