I Need a Sax

Posted by jetblack on December 4th, 2006

Today’s Holidailies prompt:

Holiday music: essential part of the season, or ‘no way, it makes my ears bleed’?

I don’t know if it’s necessarily essential, but then ever since Capra made It’s a Wonderful Life, it seems like that movie is essential to the American holiday season. For the record, I haven’t seen that movie in twenty years or so, and I don’t need to see it again. As for music, strictly as a student of music, there are quite a few tunes that hold a special place in my heart. When I was in high school, I would participate in walking trios and quartets for both choir and band. I remember in my senior year, I had a lot of fun doing the sax quartet with music written by the Nuclear Whales Saxophone Orchestra. Their arrangement of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer has this kickass bari sax line for it. I remember the other players got annoyed because I would want to play it all the time. Too much fun.

That reminds me of how much fun it was to play in a band. Although it was a high school marching, concert, and jazz band, I met so many awesome people who shared the same interests. I even met my best friend because of marching band and we still hang out. I bought a bari back in 1998, and I had to sell it to pay off debt less than two years later, much to my regret.

I wish I had a sax again.

Holiday Party

Posted by jetblack on December 4th, 2006

The following invitation was sent out from my wife’s LJ a few weeks back:

What: Holiday Shindig/Party/Open House type thing. Nothing fancy- just a casual get-together.

Where: the humble abode of and

When: Sunday Dec. 10, noon-whenever. Come by when you can and hang out as long as you want.

What about food?: I’ll supply a few appetizers, a couple of desserts and drinks, but it’d be great if everyone can bring something. Let me know if you have something specific in mind. Note: chocolate chip cookies are already taken care of.

Leave a comment if you’ll be able to make it and/or any questions you may have.

UPDATE 12/3: it’d also be great if you brought one non-perishable food item for local food drives.

I’ll try to be conscious during that time, but I’ll have worked from mdnight to eight that morning. Mostly though, you’re going to want to come for the cookie bake-off between me, Julia, and Tap. You are directed to declare me the winner, for my cookie recipe is handed down from on high and rules you all with a mighty flavor.
