One Month In

So, I’ve been at the job for about a month, now.  I figured I would give a little update on what’s happening there and how I feel about it.

I started at Teneros on October 10th, and I can safely say that I’ve been pretty pleased with the change in the job since quitting Yahoo.  The commute is a little longer, sure, but that’s okay.  I carpool with one of the other guys in the morning and my hours are pretty good.  I work from nine until six every day, and for the first time in a long time, I actually have weekends off.

Some of the drawbacks are having to work with Microsoft-based systems a heck of a lot more than I have in the past.  I had been working with unix-based stuff for the past seven years straight.  So, having to come back into the Windows server mentality is quite the shock, but I’ve found that most of my unix knowledge actually transitions to stuff like Exchange so long as I remember that the basic concepts are adhered to.  It’s just all about implementation.

I hope this doesn’t mean I have to turn in my sysadmin card or something.

Darts are major part of the NOC at Teneros.  The first day there, they brought out this high-end soft tip dartboard and asked if I played.  Truth be told, I played a lot when I was a kid.  My dad had a steel tip board in the backyard and we would play baseball and shoot-out all the time.  Of course, eventually, that old dartboard got wrecked and we never really bought a new one.  Though, I think my dad will has the board’s cabinet somewhere in storage, maybe.  Anyway, I play a lot with the guys and I’m getting kind of okay with shooting darts.  They play a metric ton of cricket or cut-throat cricket.  I personally like cut-throat a lot and I’ve won a couple of games playing that.  I finally got my first regular cricket win last week and then I won again the next day, prompting the others to step up their game a little bit.

I haven’t won since.  But I do come in second more often than I had in the beginning.  Oh, and I ordered my own set of darts, tips, flights, and accessories last week.  They should arrive today (I hope).

Some of the major differences (besides darts) between Yahoo and Teneros lie in the tracking of issues.  Everything at Yahoo had a ticket, but at Teneros, it seems like opening 8 tickets in one day is a ‘busy’ day.  Shit, at Yahoo, opening 8 was considered ultra-light.  I think my average ticket/case closes per day was 25-30.   Teneros isn’t Yahoo, obviously, but any time I take a support call, I always open a ticket just so I can track it later.  Also, I’m not a huge fan of Salesforce.  I mentioned SugarCRM to my boss, but the whole company uses Salesforce for a reason (they don’t want to manage the servers for a CRM application) and I mentioned that Sugar also does hosting for applications.  And I mentioned that I happen to know the director of customer service over there (Hi Jason!  Just tryin’ to toss some more business your way!), but I’m pretty sure that the new kid’s not going to sway any minds on this one.  They’ve been on Salesforce since the beginning, I think.

All in all, though, I’m really enjoying the work and more importantly, I’m liking the company of my co-workers.  In a short amount of time, I’ve felt very welcome in their environment and I’m eager to make some major contributions to the team.

I’ll try to revisit this in another month and see where I am.  I suspect I’m still in the ‘honeymoon’ phase of this job, so of course it’s going to be a flowers-and-candy type of post, right?
