As many of you already know, I’ve been working at Wal-Mart.com since March 29th. In that time, I’ve also been waiting for my paycheck since the first pay period ended. Normally when I get hired, I figure that I get paid within at least 2 weeks of the previous pay period, even if I just start. When I worked at PayPal, I had my first paycheck three and a half weeks into my stint over there. Unfortunately, it’s been over a month, and no money, so I’ve been borrowing some from my mother just to fuel up the car so I can go to work. I hate having to borrow money, but when it literally comes down to having none just to go to work, I tend to get antsy. I’ve been calling up the guy who recruited me and who pays me, and he explained that because I’m an independant contractor and not a W-2 employee, basically what happens is that he sort of brokers the deal and skims a percentage off for finding me and getting them to hire me, and following that, I invoice Wal-Mart, then Wal-Mart pays my recruiter, and then my recruiter pays me. Kind of a hassle just to get paid, but I’m trying to hang in there as much as I can. Well, rent’s coming up and still I have no money for that or paying some of the bills I’ve been straggling along for the past four weeks plus. I call up my recruiter and tell him that if I don’t get paid soon, I’ll have to quit the job outright because I can’t afford to drive up to Brisbane from San Jose every day (it costs roughly $40 per refill of the gas tank from empty, and Brisbane is 60 miles from San Jose, you do the math). After about five days of driving back and forth, my tank’s empty per 120 miles round trip per day. I called him up and told him, and he told me if worse came to worse, he’d write me a check for the paycheck and then let Wal-Mart reimburse him. So hopefully by Monday, I’ll have money, which would be nice because I’m in dire need.
