Blast from the Past

For those of you who don’t know, I am set to exclusive on AIM and ICQ. Back in the day, AIM and ICQ were getting deluged with spam advertisements that forced me to set myself exclusive on both mediums, and even on MSN and Yahoo. This means that only people on my contact list can see me, chat with me, etc. This led to some problems when I started doing major projects and people wanted to get in touch with me, but it works out when I explain why I do what I do.

As a matter of chance, this morning I went unexclusive, as I was waiting for someone to contact me via ICQ, and a very old and dear friend of mine from back when I used to rp Pern every damn day contacted me and asked me how I was doing. I got a serious blast from the past during that conversation, and I also gathered that she’d been attempting to get a hold of me for over a week using my ICQ number without result until that morning. Needless to say, I boggled at the way it worked out, and I was glad she got a hold of me. We shared a major bond with one another back then, and it was really cool to play catch up and revisit that. I added her in and went back to exclusive mode, since I’d accomplished what I needed to that morning. The cool part is, she might be coming to the west coast to visit, and she wants to hang out while she’s in the Bay Area. I’m looking forward to that. 🙂 Maybe I’ll take her to see a Giants game.

In other news, I have booked my flight to Philadelphia for February 12 and returning on the 26th. I will be in the city of Brotherly Love for two weeks, and I’m really hoping to relax and just get away from the local area for a while. Also, because this will be the first time I’ve ever been to Philly, with all its rich American history, I want to visit Independence Hall and see the Liberty Bell. Then maybe the Rocky statue. 🙂 I don’t have set plans for my trip out there, but it’ll get figured out as I get closer and closer to February.

Also, looks like I’m going to go see Robert Schimmel at the San Jose Improv on the night of the 10th! He returned earlier than usual; he’s typically a May headliner. Doesn’t matter, because I’m going to go and laugh my ass off. Schimmel is awesome, and for those of you who’re local to San Jose, head over to their website and see if you can’t score from tickets. Catch a dinner show, if you can, because the restuarant in the Improv is awesome and worth it!

The Rocky statue is easy to find – it’s in the middle of the city now. Take either of the subways (the Market Street Line goes east-west and the Broad Street Line goes north-south) to City Hall, and go outside. It’s in the courtyard of City Hall.

If you go to the Philadelphia Art Museum, and walk around to the steps, you can still (or at least ten years ago you could) see the place where the statue, sans pedestal, was mounted for the filming of the scene in the movie – the footprints and the holes in the marble.

Incidentally, if you don’t go to Geno’s and have a cheesesteak you haven’t actually visited Philadelphia properly. 1219 S. 9th Street.

Also, go visit South Street, preferably on a Saturday night. They close the street down and turn it into a pedestrian mall. Much fun wandering and looking at stuff.

You should run up and down the steps, humming “do do doooooo, do do doooo” to yourself. It’s just something everybody’s got to do.

Geno’s, or Gino’s? I tried looking it up, and couldn’t find it.
