Color Me Flabbergasted

The owner of the Kansas City Royals was just in my office. He is also the chairman of the board of directors for the Hall of Fame.

    David Glass, Owner/Chief Executive Officer

    David D. Glass became Owner and Chief Executive Officer of the Kansas City Royals on April 18, 2000 after serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Royals since Sept. 23, 1993.

    The former President and Chief Executive Officer of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Glass joined the company in 1976. Before assuming his position at Wal-Mart, he was general manager of Consumer Markets, a grocery chain in Springfield, Mo.

    In his position as Executive Vice President of Finance for Wal-Mart Stores, he administered the overall financial and accounting responsibilities of the company prior to his appointment as Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer. He served in that role until 1984 when he was named President and Wal-Mart’s Chief Operating Officer. In 1988 he was named Wal-Mart’s Chief Executive Officer. He stepped down from the position in January of 2000.

    Glass was active in the company’s growth from 125 stores in 1976 to its present operation, which includes more than 4,000 Wal-Mart stores, supercenters, and Sam’s Clubs throughout the United States and internationally.

    Glass was named Retailer of the Year by members of the retail industry in 1986 and 1991 and was inducted into the Retail Hall of Fame in August, 2000. Mr. Glass has been named Most Admired CEO by Fortune Magazine and was tabbed as the 1995 Chief Executive Officer of the Year by Chief Executive Magazine.

    He is a member of the Board of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., and the Baseball Hall of Fame.

    A native of Mountain View, Mo., Glass graduated from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield and serves as a member of their alumni association. In 1988, the SMSU College of Business was named David D. Glass Hall in honor of his support and dedication to higher education.

    Glass and his wife, Ruth, are the parents of three children, Dan, Don and Dayna.

    David D. Glass is Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. David was promoted to this position in January 2000 after serving as President and Chief Executive Officer for 12 years.

    During his term as President and Chief Executive Officer, which began in 1988, David guided Wal-Mart through a period of unprecedented growth and international expansion. Currently, he oversees the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors, which is responsible for implementing policy decisions of the Board of Directors and acting on its behalf between meetings.

    In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., David serves as official owner and the chairman and CEO of the Kansas City Royals baseball Organization, as well as, the Board of Directors of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

    David earned a bachelor’s degree from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri and is a member of its alumni association.
